Do you or don’t you? I did an informal survey on social media in which most of the respondents said they don’t make New Year’s resolutions but many people did comment that they make goals.
This got me thinking about the difference between a resolution and a goal. My definition of each would be.
Resolution: A change in behavior. For example “I’m going to eat better or exercise more.” These would be resolutions. In my informal survey several comments were made about making changes in the upcoming year as part of resolutions.
Goal: A measurable outcome or achievement. For example “I’m going to lose 10 pounds or run a 10 k.” These would be goals.
I don’t make New Year’s resolutions. I try to make changes to my behavior whenever I feel I’m getting of course and need an adjustment. Â But I do set goals for myself at the beginning of each calendar year. I’ve been an advocate of the S.M.A.R.T goal setting system for many years. Make your goals:
Specific
Measurable
Attainable
Relevant
Time-bound.Â
So here are my goals for 2014:
1) Run the LA Marathon. A marathon is 26.2 miles. Just to be clear the longest distance I’ve run is 15 miles and that wasn’t easy. So physically and mentally finding the strength to run 26.2 miles is going to be a challenge. The marathon is in March so stay tuned for updates.
2) Grow Carrington Real Estate Services to 2000 agents before the end of 2014. We are currently at 1200 agents. That’s a net of 800 agents in 12 months. With the help of my leadership team across the country I know we can do this.
3) Take a 1 week adventure vacation with Dustin. We haven’t figured out exactly what or where but some options being discussed are hiking in Vietnam or a biking trip in Europe.
4) Start a monthly Mastermind meet up with people I admire and who inspire me but I don’t get to interact with often enough. I’m going to host a virtual meet up to chat about business, life and other interesting stuff. Let me know if you want an invite!
Have a happy and incredible New Year!!! 😀 😀 😀
I hope you have a beautiful day.
Great post Wendy! I’d love an invite to your Mastermind. I’m pulling for you for your marathon – you can do it!
Happy New Year!

Thanks Cathy! I had you on my list of invites! Happy New Year!
Hi Wendy,
You always inspire me! I have a couple S.M.A.R.T. goals set and written in a place that I won’t forget them. Good luck with all your goals, I’m sure you’ll reach them and shine.
Joan
Thanks Joan! I know you’ll reach your goals as well. I miss you but am so glad I still get to follow along with you and your family via social media. Come visit me Southern California soon!
