3 Takeaways from Inman Connect (#icny)

Glass Half Full

It was the first time in several years that I got to attend Inman Connect in New York City as a spectator. Usually I’m racing from meeting to meeting, moderating panels, working a booth and hosting events. I had a some really great meetings but I also got to spend lots of time sitting front and center listening, taking notes, Tweeting and just completely enjoying the opportunity to be part of the audience.

Here are a few of the things that really stood out for me from the event:

  • We are the cleanest dirty shirt in the laundry when you compare our economy to that of any other advance economies in the world. An interesting twist on the glass is half full metaphor. Generally, the group was pretty optimistic that we are through the worst of economic challenges that have so greatly impacted the housing industry. The business will never be the same, but we survived. Thank goodness the glass was overflowing a few years ago because half full isn’t so bad at this point.
  • I’ve been trying to figure out a way to get more video on my sites and in my world. One of the obstacles has been figuring out the right equipment.  I think I found a solution. The product is called HDhat. The full set up is about $650 and gives you lighting, audio and a tripod that will allow you to record directly from your iPhone or iPad. Throw in a cool video editing app and I’m set. The gear in on order and I can’t wait for it to arrive.
  • Reshma Saujani rocked and introduced me to Girls Who Code. An organization whose mission it is to get young girls age 13-17 excited and involved in computer sciences. There is a huge demand for coders yet only 14% of computer science degrees are awarded to females. Why? Young girls don’t want to hack at computers all day to build video games. They want to make a difference and work on projects that will help people and make the world a better place. Think of how powerful that innate motivation combined with coding skills could be on future products and services. I love this program!!!

So in summary be positive, use video and support Girls Who Code! To pick up all kinds of interesting bits and pieces from the event check out the Twitter stream with the #icny hashtag.

I've spent my career working with people and organizations to help them build their brands. We live in a connected world where that line between a personal and professional persona has become nonexistent. Your brand is you 24/7. This blog is about me and my life. Some of it will relate to my passion for the real estate industry and some of it will just be about me living life and exploring my interests. The opinions expressed here are my own personal opinions.

  1. Thanks Wendy for sharing your take-aways. I LOVED Reshma from Girls Who Code, and was just inspired. It’s so important to empower young women with technology. Thanks for sharing. I wish we could have caught up with each other in person. 🙂
